Things You Can Do
Here are some major things you can do:

Here are some smaller, less time intensive things you can do:

Petition to Oppose Samuel Alito's Confirmation to the Supreme Court HERE!!!

Sample Letters to the Editor to Oppose Samuel Alito HERE!!!

  • Join a Volunteer Planning Committee We have organized 6 different advisory/planning committees for volunteers that are interested in taking a leadership role, helping us develop our strategy, recruit other volunteers, etc. These committees meet once a month and offer volunteers a great opportunity to use their previous organizing skills and learn new ones. Consider joining any of the following committees:

  • Outreach Committee: Volunteers on this committee will work with staff to develop an outreach plan to increase NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolinaís visibility in the community as well as to recruit, organize, and involve new volunteers. Members of the committee will sign-up for specific areas of focus including outreach research, planning trainings, planning tabling events, organizing petitions, planning phone banks, working with other task forces, responding to media, and more.

  • Emergency Contraception Task Force: Members of this task force will develop and carry out a plan to increase knowledge and awareness of emergency contraception in the community. This will involve planning many outreach activities, doing research, sending mailings, and creating new ways to spread the word about emergency contraception.

  • Campus Organizing Program: If you attend a college or university in North Carolina or act as an involved alumni, we invite you to join this program and be the NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina representative on your campus. Together we will plan events to raise awareness around reproductive rights on your campus. This will involve tabling, recruiting volunteers, educating a new generation of pro-choice activists, and coming up with innovative ways to get our message out. NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina will provide you with many resources and materials that are useful to campus organizers. This group meets once a month, and those that live far away can call-in to the meetings.

  • Legislative Committee: NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina is organizing an advisory group to assist us with grassroots lobbying this session. This will include recruiting volunteers, establishing phone trees and letter-writing campaigns, monitoring legislative actions, organizing events, building community support for/against legislation, and some direct lobbying at the legislature. The group meets with NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina organizers to plan, but if members are far away they can call-in to each meeting.

  • Development Committee: This group will assist NARAL's Executive Director with overall organizational development, fundraising strategies, building and strengthening contact networks, and will even help plan or host fundraising events.

  • Organize a Local Volunteer Group:NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina needs your help to spearhead organizing efforts across the state. This lead volunteer(s) will work with staff to develop and carry out local organizing initiatives and activities, such as starting a local NARAL volunteer committee and mobilizing the community. This is a great opportunity to learn organizing skills while fighting for reproductive freedom in NC.

  • Host an Event:NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina is looking for volunteers to host events including house parties, choice celebrations, choice conversations, happy hours, and fundraisers. • Make a Financial Contribution: If you donít have the time but you do have some money to spare, please consider making a donation. We are working to establish a sustainable presence here in NC and every little bit helps.

  • Canvassing: At community events where we cannot set up a table, we often like to walk around with petitions and information to let people know that we are active in NC and how they can get involved. We will also canvas door-to-door once or twice this summer. Canvassing is important because it reaches many people we would not reach otherwise.

  • Flyering:Whenever we are sponsoring our own event, we will often put up flyers throughout the area or pass them out locally. We will need volunteers to help us with this large task to increase publicity for our events and our organization.

  • Phone Banking:During grassroots issue campaigns, we will often do a phone bank to inform the public about our issue and to gain support. We call community members who are identified as progressive and are usually friendly and receptive to our issue. Phone calls generate large numbers of support that is not possible through mail.

  • Office Work: We also need volunteers to help out at the office periodically with stuffing envelopes, data entry, and similar tasks.

  • Attend a Volunteer Training or Event: As more choice-related bills are introduced in the NC General Assembly, we will need volunteers to write letters-to-the-editor expressing their pro-choice opinion on hot issues. Our staff will assist in you finding correct facts and statistics but your personal relationship to the issue is what is most important.

  • Tabling:Sometimes NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina will get booth or tabling space at community events where we can hand out information on our organization and our issues. Staffing a table involves interacting with the public through telling them about our organization, handing out materials, and then getting them involved in some way, whether it is signing a petition or signing up to volunteer. These are fun events and crucial to recruiting pro-choice supporters throughout the state.
