Facts on the Status of Reproductive Health in Communities of Color in NC -
The reproductive health needs of North Carolina women of color and low-income women are going unmet. North Carolina women of color and low-income women face a complex array of barriers, ranging from egregious historical discrimination to socioeconomic constraints that work to restrict access to critical health services. Although women of color and low-income women represent two distinct groups, in North Carolina both groups are disproportionately affected by policies that restrict access to the full range of reproductive health information and services, including prenatal care, contraception, and abortion.

Contact the State School Board to Improve the Sex Ed Curriculum -
NARAL Pro-Choice NC is deeply concerned about the prevalence of STDs and teen pregnancy in our North Carolina youth and the lack of good, potentially life-saving sexuality education that they are getting in the NC Public Schools.

Office Intern

NARAL NC is seeking a motivated individual to provide office support for the many projects that we are undertaking this year. All interested individuals should inquire.

Campus Organizing Program

Throughout the state of North Carolina lies a valuable resource... our youth! NARAL NC is mobilizing youth across the state to help register their peers, educate them on choice issues, and get them to the polls! If anyone is interested in taking a leadership role in organizing a pro-choice activist base on a college campus, please inquire!

Legislation Work

EC in the ED Campaign (Emergency Contraception in the Emergency Department)

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO PARTICIPATE IN:

1) Educational Outreach Committee which involves researching the availability of EC in various areas and distributing educational material on EC to various appropriate facilities.
2) Legislative Committee which involves drafting proactive legislation to introduce to the General Assembly in the upcoming January session.

CPC Project (So-Called Crisis Pregnancy Centers)

Anti-choice activists have mobilized on a grassroots level by setting up crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) around the country, including North Carolina. These fake “clinics,” under the pretense of providing a full range of services, are actually designed to pressure women into carrying unintended pregnancies to term by providing misleading and inaccurate information about abortion and other reproductive health concerns.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO PARTICIPATE IN:

1) A Public Relations Committee which involves writing to and communicating with the media regarding this subject.

Comprehensive Sex Education

The current law in North Carolina states that all public schools must teach abstinence-until-marriage education. Only approximately 10 % of North Carolina school districts have chosen to teach their students a more comprehensive curriculum that teaches teens about contraception and STD prevention.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO PARTICIPATE IN:

1) Educational Outreach Committee which involves researching the specific policies on sex education in each school district in North Carolina. In addition, individuals participating in this committee will also gather contact information for each school board and establish relationships with advocates, such as parents, students, nurses, teachers, and school board members.
2) Legislative Committee which involves drafting pro-active legislation to introduce to the General Assembly in the upcoming January session.
3) Public Relations Committee which involves bringing awareness to this issue in your local community, including but not limited to writing letters to the editor and participating in school board meetings.

Any individuals interested in working on one or more of these projects, please contact Agnieszka at 919-829-9779 or

Crisis Pregnancy Centers -
"So-called" Crisis Pregnancy Centers, or CPCs, are fake “clinics” usually run by anti-choice activists. In NC, only 17 counties have abortion providers, but there are over 70 CPCs in this state. A recent investigation of CPCs by NARAL Pro-Choice NC uncovered that many use deceptive advertising, biased information, and provide limited options for women in need.

Emergency Contraception for Rape Victims -
Each year 25,000 women become pregnant because of rape or incest. In NC, approximately 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted in her lifetime.

In a survey conducted by NC Women United, NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, Planned Parenthood and the NC Coalition Against Sexual Assault in Fall, 2004, it found that 75% of NC hospitals dispense EC on site. Nine of those, admitted to having policies in place that allow doctors to deny rape victims pregnacy prevention care.

In an attempt to undermine Roe v. Wade, anti-choice activists have been promoting Targeted Regulation of Abortion Provider ("TRAP") laws. These laws purport to promote maternal health and safety but in fact simply add to the cost — sometimes prohibitively — of providing abortion services, with no medical justification.

Comprehensive, responsible sex education teaches abstinence and resistance skills, as well as contraceptive and STD/HIV prevention information. Meanwhile, abstinence-only programs that deny teens the full range of information regarding human sexuality that they need to make responsible decisions have not been proven effective. In fact, such programs may be harmful to teens' health.
